November retail sales rise

Maine retail sales rose nearly 5% in November compared with the same month the year before, fueled in part by a jump in lodging and restaurant sales.

Total taxable retail sales were $1.23 billion, a 4.9% increase over November 2009, according to the Maine State Planning Office. During the month of November, lodging sales rose 9.3% and restaurant sales increased 3.4%. Other big gains were seen in auto and transportation, which rose 6.5%, and other retail sales, which saw a 6.7% increase. Business operating sales also climbed 11.4% over November 2009.

Year-to-date retail sales were 2.9% higher than the same period one year prior.
