Nurses protest at EMMC

About 30 unionized nurses protested yesterday outside Eastern Maine Medical Center to draw attention to what they say is chronic understaffing in most units at the Bangor hospital, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Understaffing at EMMC is one of the key issues in contract negotiations between the hospital and its full-time registered nurses that began today, the paper said. The nurses' contract expires Sept. 30. The Maine State Nurses Association, which represents about 1,500 RNs across the state, wants EMMC to form a committee of direct-care nurses to set staffing guidelines, the paper said.

Hospital officials said the units that involve nurses are staffed appropriately and that nurses have enough input on the matter, the paper said.
