Ocean energy bill gets initial approval

A legislative committee gave its approval Wednesday to a bill that would implement recommendations from the Governor's Ocean Energy Task Force.

Members of the Committee on Utilities and Energy voted unanimously to support LD 1810, which would define and set goals for offshore wind and tidal power development, according to reports from the Portland Press Herald and the Capital Weekly. Included in the bill is a goal to build 5,000 megawatts of offshore wind by 2030, amendments to the state's submerged lands leasing rules and changes to permitting for offshore wind projects.

During a work session on the bill, committee members supported a plan that would allow the Maine Public Utilities Commission to set up a new offering that would allow consumers to buy electricity from ocean turbines at a premium rate, according to the Press Herald. The offering would offset the extra cost associated with generating the power.
