Offshore wind power touted

Wind and tidal power could be a good alternative energy source in Maine, but those projects are being stifled by stiff regulations and environmental concerns, experts said at a conference in Northport yesterday.

More than 150 people attended the conference, "The power of the gulf: Considering ocean energy in Maine," sponsored by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and the University of Maine School of Law's Center for Law and Innovation, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Turbines off Maine's coast could generate 133,000 megawatts of power, but the technology to harness that power doesn't exist yet, said presenter Walter Musial, an engineer at the National Wind Technology Center. An offshore wind energy developer, Peter Mandelstam of Bluewater Wind, said investors, too, are wary of funding such projects because of the myriad of regulations, the paper reported.
