Texas wind company opens Aroostook office

A Texas-based wind power company looking to develop a wind farm in Aroostook County has opened an office in Presque Isle.

Horizon Wind Energy, based in Houston, is proposing an 800 megawatt wind farm with up to 400 turbines and plans to file for state permits later this year, according to a press release from Gov. John Baldacci's office. The office will house Horizon employees working on that project and any other future projects, according to a press release from the company.

Horizon has been considering northern Maine for wind power for the past three years, and recently said it was looking into a site near Bridgewater, the Bangor Daily News reported. The project could bring in $1.6 billion in investment and create between 135-150 jobs, according to the Baldacci release.
