Old Town Canoe cuts production, cites economy

Old Town Canoe has temporarily slowed production and cut some employee hours in light of tough economic conditions.

Fewer canoes and kayaks were manufactured last week in an effort to reduce inventory and overhead, the Bangor Daily News reported. Another temporary cutback is expected near Christmas, a company spokeswoman told the paper. No layoffs are planned, and while the paddle boat market is down, the company remains in solid financial shape, she said.

A major employer in Old Town, the company is owned by Wisconsin-based Johnson Outdoors, a manufacturer of outdoor recreation products.
