OSHA looks at Turner egg farm

The federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration is investigating working conditions at an egg farm in Turner, after a tip from the state.

Two federal agents visited the farm, operated by Maine Contract Farming and Quality Egg of New England, on a referral from the state, William Coffin, OSHA's regional director in Augusta, told the Sun Journal. State agricultural officials recently searched the farm to investigate claims from a national animal protection organization that the farm mistreats its chickens.

Four of the investigators missed work after becoming ill following the raid. Coffin said concerns over the levels of ammonia in the air prompted the visit, but wouldn't say which state agency made the referral or what the OSHA investigators found. A farm spokesman said the investigators did not uncover any health or safety violations.
