Ousted BIW union leaders file suit

Four former officers of Bath Iron Works' largest union have filed a lawsuit against the parent organization that ousted them two years ago.

The officers -- Mike Keenan, Mike Cyr, Cathy London and Troy Osgood -- are suing the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers for defamation and slander related to their suspension in March 2008, according to The Times Record. In a complaint filed yesterday in Sagadahoc County Superior Court, the officers claim that IAMAW's investigation into allegations of mismanagement hurt their reputations and caused "extreme emotional distress" and financial loss. Last July, a federal judge upheld IAMAW's decision to take over control of the local 3,500-member union, but said the defamation charges should be decided by a state court.

In August, IAMAW barred Keenan and Cyr from holding office in the union for four and two years, respectively, and Cyr has since left BIW and the union. Osgood has also since left the union, and London was not barred from holding office. Last month, Local S6 was put under control of newly elected officers.
