Oxford Aviation is again tussling with its host county over maintenance of the building it leases, and says the dispute forced it to lay off half its staff yesterday.
Oxford Aviation President Jim Horowitz said a $100,000 payment for building repairs that Oxford County commissioners delayed forced the company to lay off 23 people from its 50-person staff, according to the Sun Journal. County commissioners decided to withhold the payment due Wednesday because the aircraft refurbishment company would not verify what work the money would fund.
In January, the company and the county agreed to a $250,000 settlement and changes to their lease agreement, following a 2008 breach of contract lawsuit Oxford Aviation filed over water damage and roof repairs. The county agreed to pay the settlement in installments, but delayed this week's payment because visits to the building showed no signs that $50,000 already given to the company has been used for those repairs, according to news channel WCSH 6.
In a statement Thursday, Oxford Aviation said it may be forced to close altogether if a resolution is not reached quickly, according to the Sun Journal. The company also filed a complaint against the county that amends the 2008 breach of contract, alleging breach of settlement agreement and interference with the company's business relations.
