A little more than a week after voters approved Black Bear Entertainment's proposal to build a casino in western Maine, the group has named a site on Pigeon Hill in Oxford as the casino's future home.
The group announced today it will buy about 100 acres of former farmland at the corner of Route 26 and Rabbit Valley Road for an undisclosed price, according to a press release from Black Bear and the Sun Journal. Black Bear Entertainment said in October it signed an option on property but declined to specify its exact location. The property, now under contract, is comprised of multiple parcels, most of which are owned by Evan Thurlow, Black Bear partner Jim Boldebook told the paper. The group hopes to begin holding public hearings on the project and preparing to file for local, state and federal applications before the end of the year, with construction slated to begin June 2011, according to a timeline released by Black Bear. A grand opening for the casino and restaurant is tentatively planned for December 2011, while later phases of construction will include a hotel and spa, according to the paper.
Voters last week approved the casino by a margin of about 5,300 votes, but earlier this week casino opponents Oxford Hills No on One and CasinosNo! together submitted petitions to call for a recount, a process that could take weeks to finalize.
