Panel nixes joint casino agreement

A legislative panel has voted against a measure that would put three casino proposals into a single ballot question, but supported putting the question of an Oxford casino to voters in November.

The Legislature's Legal and Veteran Affairs voted 9-4 against the measure, saying there wasn't enough time to deliberate on the last-minute compromise reached by Hollywood Slots, Black Bear Entertainment and the Passamaquoddy Tribe, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The measure would have allowed voters to approve all three casino plans in Bangor, Oxford and Washington County, and would have been presented as an alternative to Black Bear Entertainment's plans for a four-season casino resort in Oxford.

Despite the committee's rejection, representatives of the groups, as well as committee members who voted in favor of the proposal, said they will continue to seek support for the three-pronged measure in the full Legislature, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The committee did vote, however, in favor of putting the Oxford County citizen's initiative on the ballot in November. The House and Senate must vote on both measures in order for them to appear on the ballot.
