Feds give $3.5M to dredge Scarborough River

The Army Corps of Engineers will dredge the Scarborough River later this year thanks to a $3.5 million federal allocation.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King on Tuesday announced the allocation, which comes in response to excessive shoaling around the river during Hurricane Sandy.

Scarborough Town Manager Thomas Hall celebrated the award in a press release, saying it would ensure safe passage for commercial fishing fleets and recreational boat traffic through the harbor, which he called "a critical piece of [Scarborough's] economic and community landscape."

The river is the second Maine waterway to receive an allocation from the pool of federal disaster relief funds approved in late January as a response to the hurricane that levied damage throughout the East Coast.

Last month, Wells Harbor received $3.5 million for similar dredging operations.
