SPO head Darryl Brown resigns

Darryl Brown, the former environmental commissioner who was transferred to the Maine State Planning Office, has resigned, effective today.

In his resignation letter, Brown said he had accomplished what he was tasked to do, which is to oversee the elimination of the SPO, the Portland Press Herald reported. Last week, a working group approved Gov. Paul LePage's proposal to scrap the office and replace it with an Office of Policy and Management, a plan that now heads to the Legislature for review.

LePage appointed Brown commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection in January, but he was transferred to the SPO after Attorney General William Schneider said he was unqualified for the DEP post because of a potential conflict of interest. Brown owns Main-Land Development Consultants, an engineering and land-planning company that helps developers get permits from the DEP.  Pattie Aho is now the head of the DEP.
