Pellet co. fined for emissions violations

A central Maine wood pellets facility has been fined more than $30,000 for air emissions violations.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has fined Maine Wood Pellets Co. LLC in Athens $31,220 for failing to properly operate its air pollution systems, according to the Morning Sentinel. DEP fined the company for continuing to operate without replacing dust filtration bags following a fire and for not having a working wet scrubber, which is used to clean pollutants from air and gases emitted. The company also failed to notify DEP of the fire at its baghouse and the breakdown of its scrubber, as well as other violations.

Consent agreements reached by Maine Wood Pellets Co., the state Board of Environmental Protection and the Office of the Attorney General order the company to make monthly payments to the DEP.
