Pen Bay Medical Center plans to break ground Wednesday for a 41,500-square-foot, two-story medical office building on its campus, at 6 Glen Cove Drive in Rockport.
The new building is intended to help the 63-bed hospital, part of the MaineHealth system, keep pace with the Midcoast region’s growing population, which is straining current facilities.
“Just a few years ago we faced a pressing shortage of primary care physicians,” Pen Bay President Mark Fourre said in a news release. “We responded by hiring more than 40 additional physicians and advanced practice providers. Our goal now is to support these new providers.”
The first floor of the building will include pediatrics, audiology and speech pathology, and ear, nose and throat practices, as well as pediatric physical and occupational therapy services.
On the second floor, Pen Bay will house internal medicine, family medicine and psychiatry practices, as well as the Integrated Medicated Assisted Treatment practice for opioid use disorder.
The building will also provide space where specialists from the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland can meet with patients in Rockport, reducing the need for children with special health needs to travel to Portland.
Construction is expected to start in late July, according to the release, with completion in the summer of 2020. Hebert Construction LLC, of Lewiston, will serve as construction manager, and the architect is SMRT Inc., of Portland.
Pen Bay did not disclose expected construction costs, but said 70% of the total expenses have been raised from donors.
