Pioneer Plastics cuts 48 jobs

Nearly 50 people are out of work after an Auburn plastics company, one of the area's largest manufacturers, cut its workforce by 16%.

Pioneer Plastics, which makes laminates for bowling lanes, countertops and other items, announced Thursday that it would cut 48 of its roughly 300 employees, citing the troubled housing industry, the Sun Journal reported. Friday was the affected workers' last day.

The layoffs mark the company's first non-seasonal round of cuts in about two years. In 1999, Panolam Industries purchased Pioneer Plastics, which has been in business for nearly 40 years, the paper reported.
