Times Union Center officials in Albany say they have broken off talks with Portland Pirates CEO and managing owner Brian Petrovek, which means the team will not move to that city.
Bob Belber, general manager of the Times Union Center, told the Portland Press Herald they will instead continue negotiations with another American Hockey League owner to see if they would be willing to move their franchise to Albany. Belber gave no reason for ending talks, but said both parties "just agreed it would be better for both sides." Petrovek had "absolutely" no comment when asked about the latest development regarding Albany, according to the paper.
Petrovek had been offered a deal to move the Pirates to the Times Union Center, which wanted to replace the departing Albany River Rats with another AHL franchise. Meanwhile, Petrovek has been negotiating a new lease agreement with the Cumberland County Civic Center, where the Pirates have played for 16 seasons. The Pirates' five-year lease expires on April 30. The team had also announced a long-term extension of its affiliation with the Buffalo Sabres, the team's National Hockey League parent.
