Plan emerges to maintain BNAS jobs

A state committee is considering a plan that could keep up to 600 civilian workers at the Brunswick Naval Air Station employed after the base closes in 2011.

At a meeting Tuesday in Bath, the Governor's Advisory Council, which advises Gov. John Baldacci on matters relating to the base closure, said employees at the base could form a nonprofit transitional benefit corporation, according to the Brunswick Times Record. The corporation would supply workers to the Navy after the closure, and possibly other groups that could use their services.

The council would need to pay for a feasibility study of the plan, which was presented by Washington, D.C., attorney Steve Sorrett. The council didn't say whether it would pay for a study, but will continue to consider the idea, the paper said.
