Tomato grower to expand

Backyard Farms has been given Maine Department of Environmental Protection approval for a $35 million expansion at its Madison headquarters.

The company, which grows vine-ripened tomatoes in its 24-acre greenhouse, plans to build five new greenhouses and three wood boilers at its 330-acre headquarters, according to the Central Maine Morning Sentinel. The greenhouses may be used to grow cucumbers.

Backyard Farms, which employs roughly 300 people, plans to begin construction this spring on a second greenhouse. It has about 18 months to begin building the boilers, which will produce steam-powered electricity and heat for the buildings, the paper said.
