Plan to bring Chinese railcar manufacturer to Limestone delayed

The head of the organization redeveloping the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone says a potential deal by a Chinese manufacturer to build railcars at the base is still in the works, but the firm is facing additional challenges.

The Aroostook Republican reported that Carl Flora, president of the Loring Development Authority, recently said that China North Industries Group Corp., or Norinco, is still interested in the project. The deal has been discussed for several years, but recent challenges include a softer Chinese economy and slowing demand for railcars designed to new North American safety standards for shipping crude oil, the paper reported.

Last year, the company paid $40,000 to keep an option on part of a building at the former air base.
