The Maine Department of Transportation says it will award a Florida company a five-year, $3.8 million contract to operate and maintain the Casco Bay Bridge.
It would be the first time the state has privatized operation of a bridge.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the change won’t affect the cost of operating the bridge, but it will allow the department to relocate eight of the nine positions to other transportation work, resulting in some financial savings elsewhere.
The switch to Miami-based FDI Services Inc, which has been selected by the department, shouldn’t be noticeable to bridge users, Dale Doughty, director of maintenance and operations for the department, said at a press conference Monday. The department posted the notice seeking bids in October.
The Casco Bay Bridge, the largest of Maine’s eight movable bridges, carries between 30,000 to 35,000 vehicles per day.
FDI Services will seek employees locally to staff the operation, including those currently operating the bridge. The full transition to the private contract is expected to be completed by late February or early March 2016.
