Planned cold-storage facility in Portland is expected to heat up future exports

The Maine International Cold Storage Facility, which is expected to open on the Portland waterfront in 2024, will be the subject of a panel discussion Nov. 16 at the University of Southern Maine.
The cold-storage facility, which is being built at a cost of $55 million, will be 107,000 square feet and located in the intermodal area of the Portland waterfront, with proximity to the container ship operations, train transport and highways.
Cold storage had been considered a missing link in Maine's infrastructure. The cold-storage site is expected to be used by the fishing industry, but also by biopharma companies, food processors and packaging firms, craft brewers and others with commercial refrigeration-and-transportation needs.
The panel will be Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Hannaford Hall at the University of Southern Maine.
The panel will feature:
- Wade Merritt, president of Maine International Trade Center
- Matthew Burns, executive director of Maine Port Authority
- Briana Warner, CEO of Atlantic Sea Farms
- The moderator will be Carol Coultas, business projects editor of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.
The conference is being presented by the Camden Conference, a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization dedicated to fostering informed discourse on global affairs.
