A former Camden National Bank employee suspected of embezzling $750,000 from customers is expected to plead guilty in federal court this week.
Christina Torres-York is scheduled to enter pleas to embezzlement and misapplication of funds, according to a letter sent from the U.S. Attorney General's Office in Portland to one of the alleged victims, the Herald Gazette reported. A spokesman with the Attorney General's Office, however, declined to comment because a criminal complaint has not been filed in U.S. District Court, though a complaint can be filed on the day of the plea. Torres-York worked for Camden National for 20 years, and was a loan officer at its Waldoboro branch when the bank discovered in 2009 that she had withdrawn $749,402 from at least five customers' lines of credit.
The bank filed a lawsuit against her in January 2010, and the Maine Contractors and Builders Alliance also sued her that month, saying she stole nearly $80,000 from the alliance's account. Torres-York served as the association's treasurer for several years.
