Poland Spring decision postponed

The Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells Water District yesterday postponed a decision on whether to sell district water to Poland Spring after about 100 protesters gathered outside the district office to oppose the deal.

The four trustees of the water district voted to postpone a decision until June 30, according to the Portland Press Herald. Norm Labbe, the district's superintendent, told the paper the postponement will give the district time to better inform residents of the proposed deal, and allow for an independent scientific review of the data supporting the proposal.

Poland Spring, a subsidiary of Nestle Waters North America, wants to draw as much as 250,000 gallons a day from land owned by the water district in Wells. Labbe said the deal would generate $500,000 a year in revenues for the district, which would offset rising oil costs, according to the paper.
