Poliquin to run for 2nd congressional district seat

Former state treasurer and persistent Republican political campaigner Bruce Poliquin announced that he will run in 2014 for Maine’s 2nd U.S. House District seat.

The Bangor Daily News reported Poliquin announced his candidacy Monday morning from Bangor on a WVOM radio show.

Poliquin most recently ran for his party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Republican Olympia Snowe in 2012 and previously ran against Gov. Paul LePage in a gubernatorial primary in 2010. Following that election, LePage appointed Poliquin as state treasurer.

Poliquin is the third Republican to declare his interest in the congressional seat now occupied by Mike Michaud, who is expected to be the Democratic nominee for governor in 2014.

State House Assistant Majority Leader Alex Willette of Mapleton and Blaine Richardson of Belfast have also announced their intentions to run for the party’s nomination in the congressional race. Kevin Raye, who previously lost two contests with Michaud for the 2nd District seat, says he is seriously considering a third run but will decide after Labor Day.

Democrats are also expected to have a primary contest in the race, with state Sen. Emily Cain of Orono, Senate Majority Leader Troy Jackson and newcomer Alden Smith of Sangerville all announcing formal bids for their party’s nomination.
