The port of Eastport is celebrating a record year for cargo, surpassing 400,000 tons for the first time in its history.
Cargo loaded Monday onto a Norwegian ship -- baled pulp headed to China from the former Domtar mill -- pushed the port's 2010 tonnage to 415,000, the Bangor Daily News reported. The port's growth is due largely to its relationship with the Woodland mill, its primary customer, which was sold in October for $64 million to Chinese-owned International Grand Investment. Although the port shipped hundreds of cows to Turkey this year, those weights were not calculated in the cargo tonnage, Chris Gardner, executive director of the Eastport Port Authority, told the paper.
Next week, the port is scheduled to formally break ground on an $8 million conveyor system, expanded cargo storage and warehouse space. The work follows an earlier expansion in 1998 at the port, which was established in 1977 and employs about 60 people.
