The Portland-based law firm of Perkins Thompson will gain access to more than 8,000 lawyers in 245 markets worldwide with its new affiliation with Meritas, a global alliance of independent business law firms headquartered in Bloomington, Minn.
The affiliation offers clients an opportunity to obtain legal counsel across borders while working with the Portland firm as a local contact.
“Companies in our market are increasingly doing business internationally; seamless legal representation on a global scale is vital,” Joseph Talbot, president of Perkins Thompson, said in a news release. “Through Meritas, we are able to offer our clients in-depth knowledge of cultural and jurisdictional issues in all of major markets around the world.”
Meritas, which was founded in 1990, has an established means of monitoring and enhancing the quality of its member firms. Membership is by invitation, and firms are regularly assessed for their expertise and client satisfaction. Firms must perform under the tenets of Meritas’ quality assurance program in order to be recertified.
A goal of membership is to help clients increase efficiencies when navigating global opportunities and challenges.
“In-house counsel at companies that are growing globally are under increased pressure to find trusted resources in specific markets that are cost-effective and right-sized and access to knowledge on specific issues,” said Sona Pancholy, president of Meritas.
Perkins Thompson was founded in 1871 and represents major banking, utilities, manufacturing, petroleum and gas refining and distribution, forest products, health care, and retail and wholesale distribution businesses, in addition to small start-up companies, local businesses and individuals.
