Portland island hotel ravaged by fire

An early morning fire on Saturday severely damaged a historic fort being renovated as a hotel on Portland’s Great Diamond Island.

The Bangor Daily News reported the fire did between $5 million and $9 million of damage to the Inn at Diamond Cove project. The former U.S. Army Barracks on the Fort McKinley site was being developed by Diamond Cove LLC into a full-service hotel and condominium complex, according to the Portland Press Herald. The paper reported that construction on the redevelopment was almost complete. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic places and was the last site being renovated.

The cause of the fire was not ruled suspicious after preliminary investigations late Saturday. The fire broke out around 4:25 a.m. and burned for 25 minutes before firefighters arrived.
