Law firm Preti Flaherty unveiled the remake of its Portland headquarters this week.
The makeover involved three floors and 41,000 square feet of office space at One City Center. Additions include hybrid and collaborative workstations and an internal staircase.
The renovations reflect changes in the post-pandemic workplace, the firm said.
“Preti has been evolving for years. The way we work together internally is evolving to be more collaborative, the way we work with clients is evolving to be more connected and accessible across geographic regions, and of course the COVID era brought about a big evolution in the structure of work routines, so the needs of our employees evolved and are continuing to evolve,” said David Van Slyke, the firm's managing partner.
“This new space embodies all these shifts. It’s creative. It’s forward-thinking. It has momentum. It’s very much a reflection of what we strive for as a firm. And we’re very happy to have done it with our existing space. One City Center is a big part of our history, and now it’s a big part of our future.”
Construction was managed by the Portland office of Consigli Construction. Design was handled by Visnick & Caulfield.
One City Center was constructed in an area once known as the Golden Triangle for its prime location between Middle, Temple and Federal streets. Preti has been headquartered there for more than two decades.
Preti is Maine's second-largest law firm, with 77 attorneys in the state and a total of 134 employees, according to the 2024 Mainebiz Book of Lists. In addition to Portland, Preti has offices in Augusta, Concord, N.H., Boston and Washington, D.C.
The project involved complete demolition of three floors "to create a blank slate from which to build a brand-new integrated space that meets the changing needs and culture of the modern work world," the firm said.
“Transformations of historic spaces like Preti Flaherty’s headquarters in the iconic One City Center building are the types of projects that require creativity to deliver innovative solutions,” said Chris Brown, project executive at Consigli Construction.
The 41,000-square-foot renovation took a year to complete. The previous layout dated to 1998.
Changes include flexible conference and event space and a combination of offices, workspaces and collaborative areas to accommodate a mix of hybrid and onsite work, less use of paper and need for storage, and new technology across the entire footprint.
