Portland OKs 2 new hotels, adding 230 rooms

The Portland Planning Board has approved construction of two hotels that would add over 230 rooms and two restaurants to the city's downtown, totaling $22.5 million in new investments.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the projects include a 131-room Courtyard by Marriot at 321 Commercial St. and a 110-room boutique hotel and restaurant to be located in the newspaper's former building at the corner of Congress and Exchange streets.

The paper reports that Jim Brady, representing developer 119 Exchange Street LLC, said the $8 million Exchange Street project is slated for completion by mid-2014.

The $17.5 million Marriot project is scheduled to begin in late February with a goal of opening in June 2014.

The new hotel rooms will add to an inventory that has increased by 300 rooms over the past three years.
