Hay Runner, a Portland design, construction and real estate firm at 99 Federal St., said this week it is expanding its design services to include interior plant design.

Hay Runner merged with East Pine Plant Interior Design, a Portland firm created as a one-stop shop for all things indoor plants.

East Pine founder Amalia Bussard and plant care specialist Sara Kosicki have joined Hay Runner.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“It was a really organic path to partnership,” said Bussard.

Hay Runner was founded and is led by Shannon Richards. It is a real estate development firm that provides services related to residential and commercial real estate transactions, project management, design, construction and furnishing, and produces design-centric events. Hay Runner provides brokerage services through its affiliation with Legacy Properties Sotheby's International Realty.

East Pine has worked in greater Portland at places such as Austin Street Brewery, Apres and SeaWeed Co. It provides interior plan design and plant care services.

As part of Hay Runner, it will be known as Hay Runner Plant Design by East Pine. The merger will give East Pine an opportunity to leverage Hay Runner's systems and architecture, interior design and craftsmanship resources, according to a news release.

“East Pine has done an outstanding job, designing, installing and maintaining beautiful botanical décor,” said Richards.

The plant design inventory and headquarters will be at Lyman School Studios at 382 Goodwins Mill Road in Lyman, 20 miles west of Portland.

Purchased in 2022 by Richards and Caleb Johnson of Caleb Johnson Studio|Woodhull in Portland, the former elementary school building is being transformed into artist studios and workshops.
