3fish Gallery, a commercial art gallery that has been a fixture of Portland’s art scene since 1997, will close after its final show on Thanksgiving weekend.
The Bangor Daily News spoke to Ron and Christine Spinella, the husband-and-wife owners of the Cumberland Avenue art gallery. Though Ron told the BDN that many recent visitors to the gallery have lamented its pending closure, he doesn’t see its shuttering, or the recent string of gallery closures in the city, as an omen for the end of art in the community.
Instead, he told the BDN that it's normal attrition and that Portland’s art scene is “moving from a big, white box to non-traditional spaces like the Oxbow tasting room, which is a gallery and beer or [another] place that’s a gallery and tattoos … that’s where the scene is going.”
