Potatoes spared from school lunch ban

The U.S. Senate has shot down a contentious proposal to limit the amount of potatoes schools can serve to students.

The Senate on Tuesday unanimously approved a bipartisan amendment authored by Sen. Susan Collins that prevents the U.S. Department of Agriculture from limiting the number of servings schools can give students of certain vegetables, including potatoes, according to a press release from the senator. The USDA earlier this year proposed cutting back the amount of potatoes available in school lunches in an effort to make school meals healthier, but Collins and potato industry advocates fought the measure, arguing in favor of the potato's health benefits if prepared appropriately.

The U.S. House passed a similar bill earlier this year.
