Presque Isle call center closes

A New Brunswick-based telemarketing business has shuttered its Presque Isle call center, putting 100 people out of work.

Connect North America Corp. closed the call center in the former MBNA building Aug. 4, Duane Walton, vice president of Northern Maine Finance Corp., which owns the building, told the Presque Isle Star Herald. Connect North America employed as many as 225 people in the building before it reduced its work force to 100 employees, according to Walton. He told the paper the closure was due to the economic downturn and telemarketing firms' desire to operate larger facilities that can accommodate more than 500 employees. The 15,000-square-foot building could accommodate 200 full-time workers or up to 400 part-time employees, he said.

Barry O'Donnell, president of Connect North America, could not be reached by the paper for comment.
