Production ceases at Madison mill after nearly four decades

Saturday marked the official end of production at the Madison Paper Industries mill, leaving nearly 214 employees without work, while a small number of maintenance workers will be retained at the site preparing it for a potential sale.

Madison Paper President and CEO Russ Drechsel told the Morning Sentinel that the retaining of a handful of workers is par for the course as the mill’s parent company, UPM Kymmene and SC Paper Corp., continues its search for a potential buyer.

“Any mill that shuts down and is looking for somebody to purchase the equipment, you want it in a ready state so it can be started up successfully,” Drechsel told the Sentinel. “You need to clean everything up properly, and that’s the process we’re going through now — an overall cleanup of the facility.”
