PUC to hold hearings on Emera Maine’s proposed 12% rate hike
The Maine Public Utilities Commission will hold a public hearing May 1 at three locations on Emera Maine’s proposed 12% rate increase.
On Oct. 2, 2017, Emera Maine filed a proposed rate increase with the PUC, asking that the company’s total revenue requirement for its distribution infrastructure and operations be increased to $93.8 million, which would result in a 12% increase.
The three-member commission expects to issue its decision in this case in June.
The May 1 public hearing will give the commission an opportunity to hear the views of Emera Maine ratepayers as it considers the proposed rate increase. Those choosing to speak at the public hearing can provide sworn testimony, which would become evidence in the case, or make their statement without being sworn in as a formal witness.
The hearings will begin at 6 p.m. at University of Maine System campuses in Orono, Presque Isle and Machias and will be conducted using UMaine’s interactive TV system at the following locations:
- University of Maine, Orono; Norman Smith Hall, Room 107, 168 College Ave.
- University of Maine, Presque Isle; Campus Center, MMG Room, 181 Main St., Presque Isle.
- University of Maine, Machias; Torrey Hall, Room 103, 116 O’Brien Ave., Machias.
“We have found that the most productive public witness hearings occur when we have strong attendance and citizens hear what others have for comments or concerns” stated Chairman Mark Vannoy. “Using the ITV technology will allow us the opportunity to hear from three different areas in Emera Maine’s territory.”
One PUC commissioner will attend at each location, accompanied by staff and a transcriptionist.

The Maine PUC regulates electric, telephone, water and gas utilities to ensure that Maine citizens have access to safe and reliable utility service at rates that are just and reasonable for all ratepayers.
