PWM expansion set to advance

The Portland International Jetport is moving forward with plans for a $75 million expansion.

The city council had no opposition to the project, presented yesterday by jetport Director Paul Bradbury, and will likely approve borrowing money to fund the project on Feb. 1, Mayor and at-large councilor Nicholas Mavodones Jr. told the Portland Press Herald. The jetport would be responsible for repaying the 30-year bond, using airport fees and funds from a federal Transportation Security Administration Grant.

The 137,000-square-foot expansion would double the size of the airport's terminal and include three new gates, eight passenger screening lanes, a new baggage-handling system and a pedestrian bridge over the roadway. Airport officials hope the expansion will attract at least one new airline carrier to PWM.
