Quimby adds acres to her land holdings

Philanthropist and conservationist Roxanne Quimby has added several thousand acres to her land holdings in northern Maine.

Through her land trust, Elliotsville Plantation Inc., the Burt's Bees founder recently purchased thousands of acres in several Piscataquis County townships, according to the Bangor Daily News. The number of acres in each township and the price Quimby paid were not disclosed. The property, known as the Benson Ponds Tract, is adjacent to some of her other land holdings and is the primary snowmobile connection between Brownville and Greenville. The state Bureau of Parks and Lands is hoping to work with Quimby to maintain access to the snowmobile trail, according to the paper.

Quimby, who sold 80% of her share in Burt's Bees to investors in 2003, has been criticized by some Mainers who oppose her practice of buying large tracts of land in the North Woods for conservation.
