Quimby national park study not on feds' list

Federal officials will not pursue a study of Roxanne Quimby's proposed national park in the North Woods, according to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

Salazar said the National Park Service has no plans next year to undertake a reconnaissance study on Quimby's national park, according to the Bangor Daily News. A reconnaissance study would be the first step for the federal government to explore creating a national park using 75,000 acres in Maine Quimby has proposed donating; the study would take several months and cost $25,000. Quimby and park supporters have proposed a more in-depth and costly feasibility study, which members of Maine's congressional delegation have opposed. Salazar's statement was in response to a query from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins during an Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on the Interior Department's 2013 budget.

Quimby was unavailable for comment.
