Madison, Kennebec Valley Gas to partner on pipeline
The town of Madison has decided not to pursue a natural gas pipeline on its own, instead partnering with the company proposing an alternative project in central Maine.
At a public hearing Wednesday, officials said they will scrap plans to build a pipeline and have instead signed a tentative agreement with Kennebec Valley Gas Co., according to the Kennebec Journal. Kennebec Valley Gas has also proposed a pipeline from Richmond to Madison. Details of the agreement weren't yet finalized, but it would allow Madison to handle distribution of natural gas within its town limits and would not include a tax increment financing agreement that Kennebec Valley Gas has been seeking with other municipalities.
Madison had proposed building a pipeline to Richmond, but voters last year rejected a $72 million bond to fund it. The town is holding another vote on the bond March 13 and will proceed with the vote. If the agreement with Kennebec Valley Gas falls through, the town can still pursue its project.
