Report: Maine community colleges most affordable
A new report by the New England Board of Higher Education says tuition and fees at Maine's community colleges rose the least over the past five years compared with other institutions in New England.
According to the report, “New England Tuition and Fees,” the cost of community college education in Maine increased an average of 10% from the 2006-2007 academic year to the 2011-2012 academic year. Costs rose 11% for in-state students and 9% for out-of-state students. The average cost increase for four-year higher educational institutions in New England was 38% for in-state students and 30% for out-of-state students. Costs at two-year institutions increased 31% for in-state students and 21% for out-of-state students. The seven campuses of the Maine Community College System currently have the lowest tuition and fees in New England, according to the release.
MCCS has frozen tuition seven of the past 13 years. Currently, Maine students pay $86 per credit hour for tuition, or $2,580 for a full-time, 30-credit-hour course load. The average cost for an in-state student to attend full time is about $3,300 in tuition and fees. Tuition for out-of-state students is $172 per credit hour.
