Reed & Reed likely to build mega berth

Reed & Reed, a Woolwich-based construction firm, was the lowest bidder for a deep-water mega berth at Portland's Ocean Gateway International Marine Terminal with a proposal of less than $4.9 million.

The city received three bids for the project, with Cianbro Corp. in Pittsfield submitting under $5.5 million and Prock Marine Co. of Rockland proposing under $4.9 million, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. All three bids were below the $7 million bond Maine voters approved in June and also less than the city's estimated project cost of $8 million. Scott Bickford, a Maine Department of Transportation contracts engineer, told The Forecaster the project will not be officially awarded to Reed & Reed for several weeks. Construction would begin this fall and is scheduled to be completed by July 2011.

When completed, the new mega berth will allow the city to host twice as many cruise ships as the 73 vessels it hosted this year, Nicole Clegg, a city spokeswoman, told MPBN.
