The Portland Regency Hotel has filed a permit with the city hall for $1.09 million in renovations. Manager David Tamulevich confirmed that the hotel at 20 Milk St. was preparing for extensive upgrades, but said it was premature to comment on the project. The Old Port hotel is in a converted armory built in 1895. The hotel opened in 1987.
Meanwhile, the Eastland Park Hotel, which was purchased by RockBridge Partners last winter, is preparing for extensive renovations as well. Those plans have not yet been publically revealed. The 84-year-old hotel with 202 rooms could be shut down during construction, according to General Manager Bruce Wennerstrom. After the deal closed, RockBridge said the hotel needed substantial improvements.
With the new Hampton Inn on Franklin and Fore streets opening this summer, 500 additional rooms have been added to the local hotel market in Portland and the Maine Mall since 2007. The total number of hotel rooms in the area is around 4,200.
