Regulators set deadline for resolving CMP cases

The state Public Utilities Commission has given itself a deadline for deciding what to do about two matters the regulators are mulling that involve Central Maine Power Co.

The commission is currently investigating complaints made by consumers over the past two years regarding CMP’s metering and billing practices. The commission is also considering proposed rates for electric utility.

The commission said Friday that staff reports in both cases will be completed by Jan. 9 and that it expects to finish deliberations of each by Jan. 31.

In a news release, Chairman Philip L. Bartlett II said, “The Commission recently received additional information from customers resulting from a filing that CMP made … and the Commission needs adequate time to thoroughly evaluate this information.”

The commissioners launched an investigation of CMP’s practices in January, after receiving “numerous complaints from CMP customers related to high bills and possible billing errors” since the company launched a new billing program in October 2017.

The PUC also noted that its Consumer Assistance and Safety Division has obtained more than $330,000 in billing credits for CMP customers in response to the recent complaints.

“As more cases are resolved, credits will continue to roll back to consumers, so it is important for consumers to bring billing concerns to the CASD,” Bartlett said.
