The City of Portland has hired Maine-based 45 North Research LLC to conduct a rental market survey of local market conditions.
This survey is being done to provide important housing data for the Portland City Council’s Housing Committee, which is reviewing policies and initiatives to address housing affordability in Maine’s largest city.
“We encourage property owners to respond to this survey to help us understand the market for rental housing in the City,” said Councilor Jill Duson, chair of the Housing Committee.
A priority of the 2017 Housing Committee was to create a “current situation” report on housing policy, availability, and affordability. The committee found that the 2017 Housing Report it received last October lacked both data on the local rental market data and a resource for finding such data.
The survey, which has been forwarded to 2,600 Portland landlords, includes six short questions whose responses will be summarized in a report to the city’s Housing Committee.
The committee encourages landlords to participate in the survey and is hopeful the results will help guide its discussion on policies and initiatives to address housing affordability.

Just last week Avesta Housing, the largest nonprofit affordable housing provider in northern New England, reported a widening gap between demand and the availability of housing for low-income renters. Avesta received 3,784 applications in 2017 and had 393 move-ins. Its waiting list has 1,594 individuals or families.
