Report finds timber co. at fault

A new state report has found that a Lincoln-based timber company did cut trees on land it agreed to preserve as deer wintering habitat and now could face penalties.

A state report confirmed yesterday that Gardner Timber Co. performed logging activities on nearly 40% of the deer habitat it promised to maintain as part of a land swap deal with the state, according to the Kennebec Journal. In the voluntary agreement, Gardner was supposed to notify the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife if it planned to operate on the habitat areas to discuss the harvesting, and the department was supposed to inspect the property afterward. State officials plan to meet with the company, and Gov. John Baldacci plans to meet with the attorney general to discuss possible penalties, according to the paper.

In 2006, Gardner Land Co. gave the state more than 6,000 acres for Baxter State Park in exchange for 7,250 acres of state-owned timberland, 728 acres of which were designated deer wintering habitat.
