ReVision Energy’s hiring of a full-time director of electric vehicle innovation is part of the company’s efforts to expand in the charging market.
The Portland Press Herald reported that ReVision, the state’s largest solar equipment installer, in 2016 installed about 30 electric vehicle charging stations. Employee Barry Woods’ new job is to promote electric vehicles.
Approximately 400 of Maine’s 850,000 registered passenger vehicles are fully electric, the newspaper reported, up from 150 in 2015. Another 400 are plug-in hybrids that run off electricity until the battery charge is depleted, switching then to the gasoline engine.
There are roughly 120 public charging stations in Maine, concentrated along the coast and in metro areas.
Reducing consumers’ anxiety about the distance between charging stations by increasing public and at-home charging opportunities, Woods told the newspaper, is a key factor in achieving greater public acceptance of electric vehicles.
Among his promotion efforts, Woods recently co-chaired a meeting of Drive Electric Maine, a stakeholder group he co-founded, which discussed the creation of a charging corridor between Maine and Quebec, the establishment of additional charging stations over the next 10 years and a workshop for employers who want to install charging stations.
Gov. Paul LePage and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard announced the charging corridor, between Quebec and Maine tourist destinations, in March 2016. The initiative involves installing more electric car charging stations in major tourist attractions.
Large organizations that installed charging stations in 2016 include Maine Audubon and Hannaford, at five of its supermarkets.
