Three of the four former staffers for gubernatorial hopeful John Richardson's campaign have pleaded not guilty to charges of falsifying documents related to Clean Election donations.
The Maine Attorney General's Office in September charged the four with multiple counts of unsworn falsification, a misdemeanor, after they allegedly falsified forms submitted by voters along with $5 Clean Election contributions. Denise Alvater of Perry, William Moore of Brunswick and Joseph Pickering of South Portland pleaded not guilty to the charges, and Alvater and Moore both requested jury trials, according to the Portland Press Herald. A fourth defendant, Lori A. Levesque of Fort Kent, has yet to respond to her eight charges, and a hearing is set for Oct. 15 in Fort Kent District Court, according to the paper.
Richardson dropped out of the race in April after the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices denied his application for public funding, saying he did not submit the required valid signed forms from contributors and that several campaign volunteers violated rules in collecting donations.
