Pot org. picks new Down East site

A nonprofit planning to open a medical marijuana dispensary Down East has set its sights on Ellsworth, two days after voters in Whitneyville approved a 180-day moratorium to temporarily block the facility.

Primary Organic Therapy Inc., which the state approved last month to open a dispensary in the district covering Washington and Hancock counties, has amended its application to locate in Ellsworth, according to the Bangor Daily News. Spokesman John Montgomery did not specify why the organization decided to change locations, but apologized for "any inconvenience to the town of Whitneyville." Primary Therapy originally picked Whitneyville because it was centrally located between the two counties, but said it would offer delivery service from Ellsworth for residents who needed it.

Ellsworth city officials confirmed meeting with Primary Therapy representatives to discuss possible locations. A moratorium on dispensaries in Ellsworth ends in January, and the city is currently drafting dispensary regulations, which the planning department plans to present to the planning board in November. The proposed amendments will likely go before the city council in December, according to the paper.
