Russian hackers target Bangor businesses

Websites for a number of Bangor area companies went down last week after Internet hackers from Russia attacked a local web development company.

Hackers on Thursday launched a denial of service attack on the servers of Bangor's Sephone Internet solutions, affecting area businesses including WABI TV5 and real estate agency ERA Dawson Bradford, according to The Maine Edge, which was also affected. Hackers overloaded the websites with illegitimate requests to access the site, which overwhelmed Sephone's servers, making the websites Sephone hosts unavailable. The attack lasted throughout the day and appeared to originate from IP addresses in Russia.

A similar attack on Aug. 6 targeted social networking site Twitter and was traced to a botnet, or a network of thousands of computers infected with malware, according to The Maine Edge.
